Deep cuts in carbon emissions will be needed to prevent climate catastrophe, and are called for in New York State’s aggressive goal of "80% by 2050."  
 
However, we benefit more by achieving reductions early, reducing carbon emissions in the atmosphere and cutting energy expenses now.    
 

 
The Challenge is not a complete response to climate change, energy supply issues or economic unraveling. It is a strong,  conscious beginning that mobilizes human caring and ingenuity, and – if successful – will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save dollars, making a sorely needed difference for our future.  We will learn our way into the larger challenges ahead, by creating early successes, common measures of progress, and a regional network of informed leaders.
