What is BPI?
The Building Performance Institute (or BPI) is “a leading developer of technical standards for home performance and weatherization retrofit work” (www.bpi.org). BPI standards are those required by federal and state incentive programs to ensure quality assurance and that public money is well spent; in other words, only work performed by BPI certified contractors will be eligible for certain government incentives.
Why should I become a BPI Certified Professional?
Advanced Training in Building Science
BPI training programs will provide you with an advanced training in building science, whole-home assessments and energy efficiency work scoping, and will prepare you for the BPI certification written and field exams. Adding this comprehensive set of skills and services to your business can increase the quality and scope of work performed, and can lead to greater customer satisfaction. Training focuses on “house as a system” approach to:
• Health and safety; air quality & moisture control
• Envelope integrity; air sealing & insulation
• Thermal comfort; optimizing HVAC systems
• Energy efficiency and reduction
First step to accessing government incentive programs:
By employing BPI Certified Professionals, your business will be eligible for BPI Accreditation and in turn eligible to participate in state and federal incentive programs such as Home Performance w/ Energy Star and the pending federal HOME STAR program. Participation in these programs will give your business a competitive edge by being able to:
- Pass on government incentives to clients, offering competitive prices
- Collect bonus government incentives for work performed
- Get discounts on diagnostic equipment and access to marketing funding
- 50% Reimbursement for cost of training, exams, & accreditation:
NYSERDA reimburses 50% of the costs for successful completion of BPI training, written and field exams, and business accreditation (75% for candidates employed by a participating Home Performance w/ Energy Star Contractor).
