Who We AreSubmitted by admin on Sun, 04/15/2007 - 00:03.
SHV is a regional organization devoted to sustainable development that builds and shares wealth, restores the environment and contributes positively to communities. Our leadership group consists of entrepreneurs, scientists, educators, planners, artists and strategists. Our vision is a creative economy that brings together science and technology, the arts, Main Street renewal and local entrepreneurship to create prosperous communities in a restored environment. Our mission is to build a creative, green economy that helps Hudson Valley communities protect and restore their environments. Working with Sustainable Hudson Valley is an opportunity for all our partners to make connections, build skills and create an economy that works for everyone — those who care about jobs and business opportunities, protecting nature, health, justice and the beauty of this place. In New York's Hudson River Valley, SHV is the only organization vigorously promoting an economic strategy that is based on environmental and community revitalization as industries in their own right, and as conditions for healthy development. SHV is an internationally-connected “think-action tank” with expertise in sustainable regional development strategies and the policies, planning and decision tools. We are a resource for consultation, training, and education on sustainable economic development methods, and on measures of genuine progress within the “triple bottom line” framework of community, environment and economy. Together, SHV's board, staff, project partners and members represent a regional network of experts and successful advocates who are taking action to create more sustainable economies and communities. Some of us are experts in new technologies and approaches to economic development. Some of us are experts in educational, social and behavioral psychology, with skill in supporting voluntary behavior change for individuals and organizations. We are serious but not bound by tradition. Our core values are integrity and judiciousness, holistic thinking, caring and respect, adaptiveness, fun and humor, people power, appreciation of beauty, and sense of place. Sustainable Hudson Valley educates policymakers and the public on strategies for moving toward sustainable development, starting with new ways of seeing community assets and possibilities. Our monthly e-newsletter reaches over 1,500 active citizens, entrepreneurs and community leaders from New York City to the Capitol District. We also take on selected demonstration projects that get communities engaged in shaping sustainable futures with imagination and spirit, linking these communities to a mix of international expertise appropriate to their unique needs and visions. SHV is a project of the Council of Community Services of New York State (www.ccsnys.org), a nonprofit incubator, and is awaiting IRS review of our application for 501(c)3 nonprofit status.
