Official projections anticipate more than 30% growth in jobs and population in six Mid-Hudson counties, 2005—2030: Rockland, Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, Putnam and Dutchess.  This conference focuses on where that development will occur—scattered throughout the Valley, disrupting ecosystems and multiplying traffic, or in more compact communities strengthening existing population centers.

The presentation will highlight projected housing demand as well as the relation between the counties where jobs are expected to locate and likely population location—a transportation issue.

Pew Research Center February 26, 2009

Survey of where Americans would like to live

31% live in a city, of whom 22% would like to live in a small town

26% live in a suburb, of whom 19% would like to live in a small town

26% live in a small town, of whom 56% want to live in a small town

16% live in a rural area. 25% would like to live in a small town

By a ratio of more than three-to-one, Americans prefer living where the pace of life is slow, not fast.

A similarly lopsided majority prefers a place where neighbors know each other well to one where neighbors don’t generally know each other’s business.
