The Nicis Institute runs the secretariat of the European Urban Knowledge Network (EUKN). This project has established itself as an authoritative European urban network with substantial support in 15 European Union member states. The network acts as a linking pin between existing networks of policy-makers, decision-makers and people in the field. The most important partners at European level are DG Regions, the URBACT programme, DG Research and DG Environment.   Cooperation also exists with the UK Academy for Sustainable Communities.


The Institute Focuses on Six Themes:

  1. Economy and Innovation
  2. Safety
  3. Welfare and Integration
  4. Education & Labor Market
  5. Governance
  6. Housing


Since 2007 Wim has been the Research Director of the NICIS Institute, a Dutch nonprofit organization focused on “evidence based” research. His focus is City Questions and Sustainable Development. Professor Hafkamp is an environmental economist from the University of Rotterdam. He was Dean of the Sociology Department of Erasmus University and has been a visiting professor at RMIT University in Melbourne.
