To counter the energy bill proposed by Democrats, the Republicans are
introducing their own energy bill. The Republican proposal does not call
for any regulation on emissions. Instead, it sets a goal for 100 new
nuclear reactors in the next 20 years and creates incentives for
increased oil and gas production on public and private lands and
offshore including oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
in Alaska. Republicans state that the bill offers energy independence
without the burden of the Democrats' "energy tax."
