A new study by the Federal Emergency Management Agency will analyze the
effects of climate change on the National Flood Insurance Program. It
will focus on three areas: the effects of global warming on inland
floodplains and coastal areas, and the risks that sea level rise poses
to the program. The findings are expected to be released next March. The
results will affect future delineation of the 100-year floodplain and is
expected to improve long term management of the program which is
currently $19.2 billion in debt from previous storm losses.
